Guide to the Total Solar Eclipse-Charleston

It’s a once in a lifetime event and it's happening right here in Charleston! The Eclipse is expected to bring over 1 million people to the Lowcountry, so get ready for the traffic, tourists, and the event of the summer.

Eclipse Totality will be from  2:46pm-2:48 pm EDT, but we recommend getting to where you’re going at least a couple of hours early.  A friendly reminder to not look directly at the sun- ever! Unless you have solar eclipse viewing glasses. Also, there have been plenty of faulty solar eclipse viewing glasses sold so if check with your vendor!

Downtown Charleston

Practically everywhere in Charleston is having an eclipse viewing party. We’d recommend anywhere with a rooftop!  Just be prepared for all the people.  Places having viewing include (but are not limited to) Fleet Landing, the Children’s Museum, Carolina Ale House, and even the Riverdogs!

The Citadel Mall

The Citadel is having a free viewing party- and it’s an “Official NASA Viewing Location”. The event starts at 1PM and has eclipse glasses for the first 500 people.  This is the perfect event for kids and families. There will be activities, entertainment, and even food trucks!  Proceeds from any cash donations go to Darkness to Light.

Mount Pleasant

The USS Yorktown is holding its own viewing party aboard deck. The “Fighting Lady” is transforming into the “Shaded Lady”  for the day of the total solar eclipse. Ships not quite your thing? Head to a restaurant down on Shem’s Creek and sit out on the deck. Looking for something a little more active? Try an Eclipse Kayak and Paddleboard tour.

Folly Beach

We hope you don’t mind the eclipse ruining your tanning time.  Folly Beach is holding a viewing on Pier 101. Check it out for some live music, and Eclipse viewing glasses.

Your Own Backyard

Not a people person? Turn your backyard into the place to be during the Eclipse. Grab a lawn chair, some good friends,  and whatever eclipse themed drink your heart desires (there are a lot of options).
