LOCAL LOVE: INTERVIEW WITH TEXTURE DESIGN CO.
Is there anything more satisfying than purchasing a new notebook or set of stationery? (We think not!) We love working with other local Charleston brands, and Texture Design Co. is one of our favorites! From whimsical prints, to notepads, calendars and notecards, their products are the perfect gift! We sat down with owner and designer Emily Kirby to learn more about her background, inspiration, and favorite spots in the Holy City.

1. Tell us about a day in the life of you! What's your usual routine?
Our day usually starts around 6am because we have an early-rising one year old! After breakfast, my husband will often play with our daughter so I can get in to the office and get a head start on emails and orders. Around 8am, we’ll switch. He’ll start his work day (we both work from home), and I’ll spend time with our little lady. Usually two days a week, I’ll take her to a local church daycare, so I can have a chunk of time to work on the business. Some days are spent designing new products while other days are spent on marketing or packaging orders. Every day is pretty different, and I think that is part of what I enjoy! Each day is full of new challenges or new creative endeavors!
2. We can't get enough of your designs - they would be the perfect holiday gift! Can you tell us a little more about how your business got started?
Thank you so much! After spending a few years in the interior design field, I decided to go back to school for graphic design. I started designing art prints, invitations and greeting cards for my personal use, and to my surprise other people wanted to buy them. Out of curiosity, I signed up for a one-time farmers market; I figured I’d just see if my designs would sell. It was a great success, and immediately I was hooked on designing and selling products. I loved the whole process! To this day, it is extremely rewarding to create something for others to enjoy!
3. Where do you find inspiration for your paper goods and artwork?
I moved to Charleston 10 years ago, and I completely fell in love with the coastal scenery and historic buildings. Much of my inspiration comes from walking downtown or driving through the little island towns here in the lowcountry.
My love for interior design also provides a lot of inspiration. I love flipping through home magazines, and pulling colors and trends that are working in a 3D space and then transferring those ideas to a 2D drawing. I’ll also walk through some of my favorite home decor stores and immediately get ideas for colors, patterns, and textures.
4. How would you describe your personal style?
When it comes to clothing, I’d describe my style as classic with pops of whimsy and/or color. I love to find timeless pieces and pair them with fun accessories.
5. Can you tell us how you styled the Evangeline Top?
First, I would just say that I LOVE this top. It feels so soft and comfortable, but it looks so chic. It also has the ability to dress up or dress down! With the holidays coming, I decided to style my Evangeline Top for a Christmas party! I paired the shirt with black skinny jeans and chunky heels. I added some big earrings for flair, and the outfit was complete!
6. Let's say you have a friend visiting Charleston for one day, and you want to show her the highlights. Where would you take her?
I usually try to squeeze in ALL the things! It also depends on the season! If they came around November or December, first we would go grab a coffee and breakfast from Millers All Day, and then stroll the residential streets south of Broad Street and or along Colonial Lake. We might take a seat for a bit at one of the parks and do some great people watching! Then back to King Street from some shopping! I would definitely recommend an Acai bowl from Beech for lunch. Later we would grab dinner on Shem Creek and watch the sunset and dolphins! If Christmas lights were up, we might end the evening with a trip to James Island for the lights show and hot chocolate!
7. What place(s) are on your travel bucket list? Why?
I really want to spend some time out West! Go for a stay at Lake Tahoe and do some exploring. Then drive up to Portland and Seattle!
